Let’s Talk - 5 Ways to Wellbeing

On Monday 7th April 2025, our Community Engagement and Projects officer Andrea attended a Flourish session at Shiloh, which is a safe space event for women who are homeless, in temporary accommodation, or at risk of becoming homeless.

Flourish sessions are run on the first Monday of the month. Each month they have a different service at the session to provide information and support. The next session is on Monday 12th May where Action Housing will be going along to talk about their service and the support that they can provide.

As part of their Mental Health and Wellbeing workshop, Andrea ran a Let’s Talk on the 5 Ways to Wellbeing with 5 members of staff, including ladies from Rotherham JobCentreRotherham Abuse Counselling Service and Shiloh.

Rotherham Council promotes the 5 Ways to Wellbeing as an easy way for everyone to take small steps to look after their mental health. Andrea spoke to the group about the 5 ways which are:

  • Be active - it can help improve sleep, reduce the risk of stress, depression and anxiety
  • Connect - creates a sense of belonging, increases confidence and self worth, strengthens relationships
  • Give - acts of kindness creates positive feelings and can help build relationships
  • Keep learning - increases confidence, self esteem and a sense of achievement whilst providing opportunities to connect with others.
  • Take notice - being fully present in the moment can help reduce the risk of depression and burnout, whilst increasing life satisfaction

The group had a lovely chat about how they incorporate the 5 Ways to Wellbeing into their everyday lives, including spending time with their pets, listening to music and dancing, cleaning (and the feeling of accomplishment that can bring) and what general physical activities they do.

Staff members from Shiloh also spoke about how they are doing their own 5 Ways to Wellbeing sessions with a group of Shiloh guests.  As part of these sessions they are planning:

  • Be active - rounders, football, frisbee etc at a local park.
  • Connect - playing board games at Shiloh and making pizzas to eat together.
  • Give - volunteering at Roy Hatfields, digging and planting around the grounds.
  • Keep learning - a museum visit to look at paleontology.
  • Take notice - going outside to choose an object to bring back and sketch, draw or paint, looking at it in detail. Providing frames for the artwork to be hung at Shiloh or take home.

Thank you to those at Shiloh for inviting us along to their Flourish event.  We look forward to our next visit!
