Let's Talk...Diabetes: in-person event - 30/01/23
Our guest speaker for the event was Sarah Veitch, a Diabetes Specialist Dietitian from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Sarah began by asking the group what they would like to know about diabetes.
She shared information on:
- What Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes are
- The triggers of Type 2 Diabetes and what the signs and symptoms are.
- The main cause of type 2 diabetes (insulin resistance)
Sarah then explained ways to manage this through changes in diet and exercise
It was a very engaging and interactive session with lots of questions and comments from the audience.
Question and Answer session:
Sarah was asked a series of questions such as:
- What are the main carbohydrates? Rice, pasta, potatoes and cereals
- The relationship between culture and diet and whether it is something as a nation that we need to change? (eating habits)
Sarah was also asked questions on various topics such as:
- Portion sizes and how much food you should consider having on your plate.
- Genetics of getting type 2 diabetes and whether it can be reversed or not.
- Information on medications that can help to manage diabetes
- Fussy eaters
- Exercise - Sarah recommended seated exercise if you had poor lung health and felt you couldn't exercise
Sarah was then asked what an ideal meal would look like.
Sarah suggested:
Breakfast: Either porridge or wholemeal bread with eggs/beans
Lunch: A wholemeal sandwich or soup with a piece of bread
Dinner: Half a plate of vegetables, a quarter of either potatoes/rice/pasta and a quarter plate of lean protein e.g. fish
Sarah also brought along handouts that explained further about Glycemic index and type 2 diabetes for the audience.
