Let's Talk Eating Disorder Awareness event write-up

Our February Let's Talk event focused on eating disorders and had 7 attendees with a mixture of the public and professionals.

Ellern Mede – Specialists in Eating Disorder treatment in Rotherham

Our first speaker of the event was James Harrison. James Harrison is from Ellern Mede, and he spoke to us today about Ellern Mede, what they do and different eating disorders they treat. They mainly deal with and treat Anorexia.

Ellern Mede:

Ellern Mede has been providing evidence-based specialised treatment for children and young people with eating disorders since 2000. They support children and young people as inpatients aged 8-18 years, as well as young adults aged 18 to 25. They offer standard and high dependency inpatient care for NHS and private customers.

Referring a patient:

Ellern Mede accepts both NHS and private patients. Call Ellern Mede Moorgate on: 020 3981 7252 and to make an NHS referral email: nhs@ellernmede.org 

Help and Support:

  • SYEDA (see below for more information regarding SYEDA)
  • Visiting your GP

SYEDA (South Yorkshire Eating Disorder Association):

We them spoke to Abbie Twomey from SYEDA. SYEDA works across Barnsley, Rotherham and Sheffield currently. They will shortly be expanding to Doncaster.

  • Early Intervention
  • 1:1 support
  • Group Support
  • Support for Carers

Overeaters Anonymous:

We were then joined by Overeaters Anonymous. Overeaters Anonymous is a fellowship of individuals who are recovering from compulsive overeating. It is a free service available 24/7, 365 days a year. There are no referrals required, meaning you can be supported straight away. The only requirement is a desire to want to change.

It is a 12 step programme and it does not offer a diagnosis.
