Menopause

Healthwatch Rotherham has been engaging with local people to understand their experiences of menopause — a natural stage of life that can have wide-ranging physical, emotional, and social effects.

Many shared challenges such as hot flushes, anxiety, “brain fog,” tiredness, and changes in mood or relationships. While awareness and openness are improving, access to care, diagnosis, and consistent support can still vary across the borough.

Positive steps are being made. Community initiatives such as Menopause Cafés, local awareness sessions, and the “Move Through Menopause” programme offer safe spaces for learning and connection. The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust is also recognised as a Menopause Friendly Employer, supporting staff through training and wellbeing initiatives.

However, there is more to do. Some people still face delays in diagnosis, difficulty accessing HRT, or a lack of mental health and workplace support. Healthwatch Rotherham is calling for better GP training, earlier education, inclusive services, and wider awareness across all workplaces and communities.

By continuing to listen, learn, and act together, Rotherham can ensure menopause is better understood and that everyone receives the care and support they deserve.
