Let's talk - NHS

On Friday 2nd February 2024, our Community Engagement Officer Andrea McCann went along to meet the u3a Lifestyle group at Tesco’s community room, to discuss all things NHS!

Andrea started by discussing how NHS services operate and giving a brief overview of the Integrated Care Systems which were introduced in July 2022 across England. She explained how they were set up to improve outcomes in anything health related, tackle inequalities in access to healthcare services and improve productivity and value for money.

Andrea went on to speak about support that was available in Rotherham for different health concerns and provided general signposting to the group including discussing the new Pharmacy First plan that enables pharmacies to treat 7 conditions without having to see a GP.

Andrea also talked about Rotherham Healthwave and how this new organisation has been set up to support and motivate every resident to live healthier lifestyles.

During the session, the group spoke to Andrea about some of their experiences of health services in Rotherham.  Positive praise was given specifically for:

  • Outpatients at Rotherham Hospital which is “Fantastic”
  • Dermatology where staff are caring, friendly and generally “Wonderful!”
  • Audiology and Ear Care Centre in Rotherham, where staff are very friendly, caring and communicate all health information clearly.

However, concerns were raised about:

  • A&E (UECC) waiting times of around 7 hours to be seen, before being sent home and then asked to come back the following morning for further investigations.
  • Cancelled appointments/procedures/operations which although understood, leaves them worrying about their health.
  • Test results not coming back within given timescales and having to chase these up.
  • Availability and pricing in NHS dental practices.

Some specific questions were raised regarding GP practices, in particular “Can you request specific doctors?” and “Should we be going back to all face to face appointments now?”

Andrea explained that “the NHS has issued guidance to all GPs which says they must ensure they are offering face-to-face appointments to all patients”.  Although GP’s can continue to offer video, online or phone consultations, they can only do so if the patients would benefit from this.

Andrea went on to say that you should be provided with a choice of doctor, nurse or other healthcare professional you see for an appointment unless:

  • the particular doctor, nurse or other healthcare professional is on leave, or has no available appointments
  • you need an urgent appointment and your choice of doctor, nurse or healthcare professional is not immediately available

The group also discussed how they felt that the movement into a more “digital world” was leaving them feeling a little lost at times. We offered to see if we could connect them with other organisations that could provide some support in this area.

The session was a great success and we’ve been invited to come and talk with the wider u3a group in April. Thank you to all those who attended and we look forward to meeting more of you next time!
